There’s no shortage of information about the serious challenges facing our planet – and although most people say they would like to do more, they don’t know where to start.
That’s where the Northwest Earth Institute comes in.
For 20 years, NWEI has helped make change more possible, more social, and yes, more fun by helping people connect with their communities and take action, together.
Self-Led Discussion Courses
NWEI discussion courses give people a framework to talk about their relationship with the planet and to share in discovering new ways to live, work, create and consume. NWEI's discussion courses have been used in the workplace, on college campuses, in centers of faith and in the community. They are designed to help break big issues into bite-sized pieces. And they help create a personal network of shared stories and support that makes it easy to take action.
Below are the titles of each discussion book and a short description.

Choices for Sustainable Living
The term “sustainability” is used so freely, it’s difficult to understand what it can mean. At its essence, sustainability embodies hope for a healthy, just and bright future for us all. Choices for Sustainable Living provides participants a powerful opportunity to explore sustainability more deeply and learn its unique meaning from individual, societal and global perspectives. Choices for Sustainable Living helps you discover new ways of living and together, make change more possible and powerful.
Menu for the Future
Over the last century, the way we grow, harvest, transport, and consume food has changed significantly. It’s easy to overlook the impact this process has on our environment. Menu for the Future helps you explore the connection between food and sustainability. Participants learn more about the many cultural, social, and ecological implications of what we eat and discuss the importance of our eating habits. Together, you discover food choices that are good for you and the health of our environment.
Hungry for Change
What we eat matters—the food choices we make everyday have an impact on our planet. Hungry for Change helps participants explore the true meaning of the phrase “you are what you eat.” Learn about our roles as both consumers and as creators—of food, of systems, and of the world we live in. Discuss how food choices have an impact on a range of issues, including ecosystem health, factory and farm worker treatment, and our global economy. Participants create personal action plans and discover how to create a healthy food environment.
Our decisions on how we live and consume are not made in a vacuum. We are affected by the consumer culture and society around us. Voluntary Simplicity helps participants examine how modern society can interfere with caring for the planet. Together, you explore how consumption patterns have an impact on you and your relationships, as well as the environment. Discover ways to slow down and live simply.

Reconnecting with Earth helps participants explore how our cultural beliefs and personal values affect the way we view and treat Earth. Together, you discuss how our well-being is inextricably linked to the well-being of our planet. Participants discover a deeper respect for the planet and a renewed commitment to act—a shift that could be the key to real and lasting change.
